5 Patterns, 3 Days, 2 Girls, and 1 Sewing Machine

January for us means one important thing… OUR ANNUAL SEWING RETREAT!!

Any time spent at Ali’s river house is always special, and this year we added an extra day because we committed to something new – an actual sewing retreat! We are so excited to announce that we were asked to be teachers at this year’s Virginia Consortium of Quilters bi-annual retreat in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. We will be teaching full-day workshops for our Stowaway and Whole Shebang bag patterns, but we also offered to teach our Wine Totes, Winezies, and All Charged Up free patterns as fillers, so we knew we needed to spend a lot of time refreshing our minds about all five patterns.

We spent the first day making decisions about fabrics, notions, and then Cutting.All.The.Things.

Oh, and we went grocery shopping. SUPER important step.

And of course, beautiful sunsets are just gravy.

Day two was super productive and before lunch we had two amazing finishes – Wine Totes and All Charged Up.

Since it was a (cold, but) gorgeous day, we made sure to get out of the house and headed to historic Gloucester Virginia for a delicious lunch at LuLu Bird’s Kitchen.

After lunch, we refocused and finished out day two with another fabulous finish – Stowaway.

On our third and final day, we focused on our last two fun finishes – Winezies and Whole Shebang.

Neither of us have sewn Winezies in a while, and we remembered how nice and quick they come together, as well as how cute they are! The versions we sewed up in this sweet winter flannel would make amazing hostess or holiday gifts.

We both were a bit blown away by the beauty of this Whole Shebang after we finished – it gave us all the *heart eyes*

We both felt so rejuvenated after sewing together and being creative together for three days in one of the most peaceful places in the world. Until next year!

Hard Day’s Night FREE PDF Pattern

Confession time. It’s been THREE years since we released our last free pattern. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

When we launched WOW, an important part of our mission was to contribute a free pattern to the sewing community at least once, ideally twice, a year. While there were many years when we met that goal, we are truly sad that we haven’t been able to fulfill it these past few years. But we are super proud of the free patterns we currently have, and they’re some of our most popular, which we also love.

So without further ado, here is the timeless inspiration for our newest free pattern. And since this song has been stuck in our heads for weeks now, it’s only fair that we pass this amazing earworm along to you. You’re welcome.

The funny thing is that neither of us can remotely remember how or why the idea for this pattern came about. ??!??!?? Turning 40 has been going really well for us by the way.

But I think we can all agree that when you love your pet, you always want them to look their best. And this tutorial will help you create a fun, interchangeable pet collar featuring stylish tie and bow tie options.

In this collage image, on the left Barkley wears the Hard Day's Night, and on the right he wears the Hard Day's Night bow tie

How cute is that?! No, not the dog! The collar! Although, Ali’s dog Barkley is indeed super cute and handsome, and since he’ll do anything for his momma, he’s always a willing model.

The fun part is that this isn’t a permanent change to your pet’s collar – the band just attaches with velcro tabs around your own collar and then you can choose to use the bow tie or tie option. You know, for all those times your pet needs to QUICKLY up their style game.

(If your eagle eyes noticed that the collar we happened to use in these pictures is holiday-themed, you’d be right. Ali owns dog collars for EVERY season.)

And our pattern includes templates for three sizes for differently-sized pups and kitties.

So now the only problem that we have is that we need one of you awesome cat-loving-readers to sew one of these up for your kitty and send them to us by email or post to your social media. I mean, we all know that cats hate it when dogs have all the fun.

Although we aren’t cat owners ourselves, so maybe we have it all wrong…

The Hard Day’s Night PDF pattern has 12 pages and over 40 color photos to help you every step of the way. You can download it in our Shop right now. Happy sewing for all of your furry friends!

WE OPENED OUR OWN SHOP!!

You all know that we usually spend way too much time trying to make our post titles super clever and pun-ny, but this one is just too important, so we’re just going to come right out and say it. WE OPENED OUR OWN SHOP!!!!!

Lucille Ball celebrating with champagne

When Craftsy decided to dismiss and devalue the sewing and crafting communities by deleting almost all of their shops in December with hardly any warning, we panicked, along with so many others.

Overnight, 50% of our revenue stream disappeared. We still had Etsy, which is stable and reliable, but we weren’t at all sure that we could support hosting our own store. Our beloved WOW has only ever been a side business for us, and we weren’t ready to see it fail, but we had to figure out our next move.

It’s taken two months of late nights and lots of failed experimentation, but we’re finally ready to launch, and we’re thrilled to take on this challenge. The best part is that we can still offer you our paid and free patterns in one place, and we’ve learned more about eCommerce and WordPress plugins than our crafty selves ever thought we could handle.  🙂

Most importantly, to celebrate, we’re offering an amazing opening sale!! Use the code OPENING50 to get half off, yes half off, your first order on our new site (valid one coupon per person through March 31, 2019). Happy shopping!
